- Pros
Aggressively low price. Nice 5-inch, 720p LCD. Long battery life.
- Cons
Middling camera performance. Low internal storage.
- Bottom Line
The G3 Vigor smartphone may be shrunken down from the flagship LG G3, but offers an excellent entry-level Android value on Sprint.
The LG G3 Vigor is a shrunken flagship phonedone right. It's a smaller version of the Editors' Choice G3 proper, but thanks to its low $29.99 (with contract) price, it drops the high-end pretenses of its miniaturized contemporaries. The G3 Vigor exceeds expectations, instead of simply trading on the strength of its full-sized inspiration. The 5-inch, 720p display is much better than what you typically get at this price, and a large, removable battery provides all-day power. Low internal storage and a subpar camera are the biggest compromises, but the G3 Vigor is still an excellent option for entry-level Android smartphones on Sprint.

Design, Features, and Call Quality
Without a reference for scale, the 5.42-by-2.74-by-0.41-inch (HWD), 4.73-ounce G3 Vigor is nearly indistinguishable from the G3 proper. It's a nice size for one-handed use and benefits from the same curved back and thin bezels of its larger sibling. The rear-mounted Power and Volume buttons look and feel identical to the G3's, and the removable plastic back has the same pleasantly textured feel. It's not a 'mini' in name, but it's one of the most faithful flagship miniaturizations I've seen.
Many entry-level Android smartphones sacrifice clarity for price, opting for lower resolution 960-by-540-pixel displays. Not so here. The 5-inch, 720p LCD is one of the best you'll find at this price, right in line with the new Moto G's display, but a touch dimmer and with less punchy colors. There's a single speaker port on the back, which gets surprisingly loud, but is easy to cover by accident and predictably lacks depth.
The G3 Vigor supports Sprint's 3G CDMA (800/850/1900MHz) and LTE (850/1900/2500) networks. Sprint still lags behind AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, as we saw in our latest Fastest Mobile Networks tests, but the G3 Vigor does, at least, support Sprint's newer Spark LTE, which can be blazing fast where you can find it. In my tests, call quality was excellent—the earpiece gets loud and voices come through clear, while transmissions through the mic are clean and sound natural. Noise cancellation worked well in my tests, quieting persistent keyboard taps, though it did struggle a bit with louder street environments.
Sprint's new Wi-Fi calling feature is enabled on the G3 Vigor, letting you make and receive calls over Wi-Fi when mobile network reception is low or nonexistent. Call quality over Wi-Fi was superb, but the Achilles heel for Sprint's Wi-Fi calling implementation is a complete lack of handoff ability between Wi-Fi networks and cellular networks. For example, if you start a call over Wi-Fi at home, you can't leave the range of your network without disconnecting. It's still useful considering Sprint's sometimes spotty coverage, but the handoff issue cripples this feature out of the gate.
In our tests, the removable 2,540mAh battery was good for 18 hours, 35 minutes of continuous talk time. That's on par with some flagship phone endurance times, putting the G3 Vigor in good company.
Also onboard are dual-band 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS, but no NFC. The G3 Vigor had no issue connecting to 5GHz networks and easily paired with an Era by Jawbone Bluetooth headset.
Performance and Android
The G3 Vigor features the same 1.2GHz, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC found in scores of low-to-midrange smartphones right now. With the same screen resolution and processor, performance in synthetic benchmarks is nearly identical to this year's Moto G. Most tasks, like Web browsing or switching between apps, run without a hitch. Loading up games like Asphalt 8 typically don't slow the G3 Vigor down, but more hectic on-screen rendering can cause framerates to sputter.
See How We Test Cell Phones
The big difference between the G3 Vigor and a similarly equipped phone like the Moto G comes down to software—the G3 Vigor runs Android 4.4 with LG's Optimus UI slapped on top, while the Moto G has a nearly stock version of Android 4.4. LG's slimmed down and refined its Android skin, but it's still a bigger resource hog than stock. This bears out with occasionally choppy animations and home screens redrawing elements after exiting some apps. They're minor annoyances, but when it comes to efficient performance on lower-end hardware, few skins can match stock Android. Thankfully some of LG's customizations prove quite useful. QSlide floating-window multitasking and QPair are useful; the latter lets you sync SMS and other notifications between the two devices. The G3 Vigor also has an IR-emitter, letting you use LG's Quick Remote app to control home theater equipment; it worked with Sony and LG HDTVs in my tests.
Of the 8GB of total internal storage, 3.77GB is available to users out of the box. That's going to be tight if you prefer local media to streaming services and like to game on your phone—titles like Asphalt 8 require more than 1GB alone. There's a microSD card slot under the removable back, which worked fine with our 64GB card, but you can't easily install apps to removable storage. Sprint loads a bunch of bloatware, but most of it is removable, so it's more of a nuisance than anything else.
Camera and Conclusions
The 8-megapixel rear-facing camera is disappointing, churning out middling shots, especially in anything but ideal lighting. Outdoors, in good light, the G3 Vigor snaps off suitably sharp images that skew towards overexposed. Focus is still incredibly quick, even in low light, but image quality drops off considerably indoors and in poorly lit scenes. White balance is routinely inaccurate with a distracting pink cast, while image noise renders images into grainy messes under typical indoor lighting. Video quality similarly disappoints, with dropped frames and waxy details indoors.
Though its 5-inch display is anything but small, the LG G3 Vigor is still a miniaturized flagship in the same vein as the HTC One Remix. But unlike that phone and older, small-screen options like the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, the G3 Vigor carries an aggressively low price tag with relatively few compromises. It's a reliable performer with specs that outmatch the majority of phones in its price class, like the underwhelming $29 Kyocera Hydro Vibe. The G3 Vigor is an excellent choice for entry-level smartphones on Sprint. If you have a bit more room in your budget, consider the $99 HTC One E8, which delivers real flagship specs and features at a reasonable price.
